3) Hazards Identification

Inhalation:

Corrosive and highly toxic, will cause irritation of respiratory tract. Symptoms range from coughing, chest pain, and burning of nose and throat, to laryngeal cancer, lung and sinonasal cancer, and liver and kidney damage.

Skin Contact:

Corrosive, can cause second and third degree burns with necrosis. Low exposure causes irritation and dermatitis, or slow healing lesions. Repeated contact can induce sensitization to chromium.

Eye Contact:

Contact with corrosive vapors and/or fumes may cause irritation redness, pain, tearing, blurred vision, or inflammation. Repeated exposure can cause conjunctivitis.

Ingestion:

Corrosive and toxic, will cause burning pain in mouth, throat, esophagus, and abdomen. Symptoms include nausea, dehydration, diarrhea, burns, fever, cramps, coma, and liver or kidney damage, leading to death.

Signs and Symptoms of Exposure:

Any irritation or burning of the eyes, skin, or respiratory system, or violent gastroenteritis.

Medical Conditions Aggravated by Exposure:

Severe toxic and corrosive, will aggravate even normal condition.

4) First Aid Measures

Inhalation:

Remove to fresh air at once. If breathing has stopped, perform artificial respiration. Maintain airway and keep warm. If breathing is difficult, have qualified medical personnel administer oxygen. Get immediate medical attention.

Skin Contact:

Remove contaminated clothing immediately and wash before reuse. Wash affected areas with soap and water for 15-20 minutes until no chemicals remain. Cover serious burns and get immediate medical attention.

Eye Contact:

Flush eyes immediately with large amounts of water for 15-20 minutes, lifting upper and lower eyelids to remove all chemicals. Cover with sterile bandages and get medical attention immediately.

Ingestion:

Get medical attention immediately. If vomiting occurs, keep head below hips to prevent aspiration. Maintain airway and treat shock. Have qualified medical personnel perform gastric lavage to remove chromates, being careful of the corrosive acid.

5) Fire Fighting Measures

Flash Point: NA
Auto Ignition Temperature: NA
Flammability Limits in Air % by Volume: NA

Extinguisher Media:

Dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or water spray. Fog for larger fires.

Special Fire Fighting Procedures:

In storage area, use unmanned hose holder and withdraw from area until fire is out. Dike fire-fighting material for proper disposal. Use protective equipment to avoid breathing dust.

Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards:

None

6) Accidental Release Measures

Shovel material into clean, dry container and cover, wearing suitable protective equipment. Keep combustibles away from spilled material and move containers from spill area.

7) Handling and Storage

Keep away from combustibles and reducing agents. Keep containers closed and plainly labelled. Store in a cool, dry area.

8) Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Respiratory Protection:

Recommended is a high-efficiency particulate respirator with full face piece. Selection should be based on contamination levels in the workplace and the respirator should be approved by NIOSH-MSHA.

Skin Protection:

Impervious clothing and equipment to prevent any possibility of contact with Barium Chromate.

Eye Protection:

Splash-proof or dust resistant safety goggles.

Ventilation to be Used:

Local or general dilution to meet exposure limits.

Hygienic Work Practices:

If there is possibility of skin or eye contact, an eyewash fountain or quick drench shower must be provided in the immediate work area. Wash skin or hands immediately after exposure. Do not drink, eat, or smoke in the laboratory.
